United Airlines 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus review: the stud-like ‘responsible’ first class

United Airlines 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus

The thing that I like best about United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus is how inconspicuously stud-like it is.

I mean, the word ‘economy’ is right there in the name. It even looks like a basic economy class seat. No one’s going to judge you for paying more for an upgrade when a basic economy seat would’ve been just fine. Especially in these challenging economic times.

Little do they know that you got to enjoy as much legroom as those up in first class did. You also got to be one of the first to board and deplane (just like them).

It’s basically first class for those who don’t want to look like they’re flying first class. What a stud you are!

My full review of United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus from West Palm Beach to Denver

Despite all of the glazing of this product that I did in the intro, let’s be real. Of course I would’ve preferred to fly first class. I didn’t even care if I would’ve been judged for it. Unfortunately, it was a bit too spendy for me, so I went with the next cheapest option: Economy Plus.

Arrival at the West Palm Beach International Airport (PBI)

This flight to Denver was scheduled to depart West Palm Beach at 3:42 PM. I arrived at approximately 1 PM in hopes of getting a bite to eat before the flight. I mean , stud-like seating situation or not, I already knew that there would be very little food offered on the four hour flight out west.

West Palm Beach International Airport passenger drop off area departures level
“Welcome to the West Palm Beach International Airport!” he says, as he cautiously looks left (but not right) before crossing a very busy roadway. This is what they mean when they tell you that the most dangerous part of flying is getting to the airport.
Walking to the entrance to the main terminal on the departures level at the West Palm Beach International Airport
Little do they know that the odds of being sliced in half by the automatic entrance door is greater than being mowed down by a giant SUV coming at you from a direction you didn’t expect. Be careful y’all.

The main benefit of a dangerous trip to the airport? All that adrenaline pumping through your veins is guaranteed to make the first sight of the United baggage drop and check-in area seem pretty exciting. You did it!
The seating area inside the B concourse West Palm Beach International Airport
FYI, the “B” in “Concourse B” stands for “Bros gonna be Bored”. This is a lot less exciting (and dangerous) than the trip to the airport was this morning.

My chariot (the United 737 MAX 9) has arrived! The body language of this ramp worker leads me to believe that he is not amused by its tardy arrival from EWR. Nor am I, my good man. Nor am I.

The boarding process for flight number 2464 to DEN

The boarding process was delayed by about 30 minutes due to the late arrival of the inbound aircraft from Newark. Concourse B at PBI isn’t exactly the most comfortable place to wait out a delay, so it felt more like an hour. Plus two.

A picture of my boarding pass, that’s what.

They got the boarding process started at approximately 3:40 PM. Economy Plus passengers board with Group 2. I somehow ended up at the very end of that line, so I essentially boarded with Group 3. Leadership has never been one of my strongest traits.

Actually, Group 1 was taking their sweet ass time getting situated, so it was a little slow going here at the boarding door.

United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus cabin and seat overview

There are 45 Economy Plus seats on the United 737 MAX 9. It’s a standard 3-3 layout, and as you might expect, these seats are located at the very front of the economy class cabin.

You (and me, I, we, they, and us) have arrived safely. Welcome one and all to United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus.
United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus row 10
All that butt clenching that I was doing since the moment I purchased this ticket two months ago? It was all for naught. There is indeed a window here in row 10! For some reason or another I was expecting this to be the row without a window.
United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus row 10 legroom
Something tells me that passenger 10A wasn’t doing much butt clenching at all in the weeks leading up to this flight. He doesn’t seem to care about the window, but I hope he’s at least enjoying all of this extra legroom.
United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus legroom and seat width
I know that I am!

These seats feature large video screen screens and power outlets. A lot of extra legroom as well. About 3 inches worth by my estimation.

That glorious moment when you stuff your thing into a tight hole and it actually fits. It would not surprise me one bit if the seat in front of me was hoping for a bigger backpack.

Large video screens. And someone who appears to have been amused by my suggestive (and probably inappropriate) backpack comment just now.
United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus electrical and power outlets
In addition to USB-A ports under the video screens, there are full-size 110 V electrical outlets beneath (and between) the seats. Powah to the people!
United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus sign on bulkhead wall
I like how there’s a sign on the bulkhead wall proudly indicating the Economy Plus thing. As well as the fact that she’s still amused by my witty commentary.

These are the second best ‘extra legroom’ economy seats in the US at the moment IMHO. Delta’s are the best (which you can see in my Delta A321 Comfort Plus review). Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 Premium Class is just as spacious, but it doesn’t feature video screen screens. Same with American Airlines (which you can see in my American A321 Main Cabin Extra review).

The departure from PBI

They got us pushed off the gate at 4:11 PM, which was about 30 minutes behind schedule. Although I was slightly concerned about making my connection in Denver, I decided not to worry about it considering that the seat next to me had remained vacant. I’d worry about missing my connection later. Not now. Not with so much extra space to enjoy.

Did you know that one CFM Leap 1B engine produces 28,000 pounds of thrust? You may not care, but the woman on the video screen might.
United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus row 10 passengers
Empty middle seat. Guess who’s gonna be manspreading all the way to Denver this afternoon?

It was a fairly long 23 minute taxi over to runway 10L, and we were in the air at 4:23 PM. Very much behind schedule, but tolerable consider considering all of the stretching out that I was doing.

What a view! I wonder how long it took the sharks to stop circling every time a 737 MAX took off from 10L? These MAX 8s and 9s seem pretty safe now.

In-flight entertainment

United’s 737 MAX 9’s feature their latest in flight entertainment product. It’s the same one you saw in my United 787-9 Premium Plus review, and it’s really good. The only issue I have with it is how long it takes to get to the main menu. There are a lot of questions to answer!

All right. Let’s watch some movies!
United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus in-flight entertainment login screen
Whoa, cowboy. Whoa. No movies for you until logging in (or choosing the “hell to the no” option and skipping it altogether).

And not before choosing how you’d like to spend your flight. They sure are nosy, aren’t they?
United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus in flight entertainment main menu
I’m just glad they didn’t ask for my social security number (and/or my mother’s maiden name). Only problem is, now that I’ve reached the main menu, I forgot why I came here in the first place. I don’t think it was about wanting to watch a movie. I don’t have the attention span for that sort of thing.

Basically, this is one of the best in-flight entertainment systems of any US airline at the moment. There seems to be an endless selection of TV shows and movies. And you betcha – it supports Bluetooth connectivity for your wireless headphones.

More stuff to fit into tiny holes! I tell you what, there are some sick mofos over at United HQ.

Hear that? Don’t worry, I can’t either. These earbuds are pretty lousy IMHO.

Food and drinks

The bad news is that alcohol isn’t free for Economy Plus passengers like is on some other US airlines. The even badder news is that the in-flight menu is void of what I consider to be the most perfect airplane food ever invented: a fruit and cheese plate.

United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus bistro menu cover
On the Bistro menu today is a smattering of complementary beverages and light snacks (and a shit ton of deep blue mood lighting). My sincerest apologies for the next 3 pics if blue isn’t your favorite color.

Those mofos over at United HQ may be sick, but they sure are smart. “If the mood lighting is thick enough, they won’t be able to see that we don’t offer a fruit and cheese plate!”
United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus drink menu
I know you can’t see this, but trust me. The menu I recently got to experience in Delta A321neo Comfort Plus was a little better (more varied and a lot less blue) IMHO.

Economy Plus passengers do get free non-alcoholic drinks and snacks of course. Unfortunately, I don’t think the snacks are any better than what they served back in regular economy class. Snack boxes (and other more substantial food items) are available for purchase from the menu.

No cheese plate, no purchase. Free snacks for me baby! FYI, this shade of blue tastes delicious.

Seat recline and comfort

Those of you hoping and praying for decent seat recline will maybe have to splurge for first class next time. Remember: these are standard economy class seats, so the recline is limited. And not all that comfortable in my opinion.

Here’s what the seat recline looks like. (I’ve obviously run out of things to say about the blue mood lighting)
Crossing my legs in United 737 MAX 9 Economy Plus
And yeah. You should be able to cross your legs in these seats fairly easily if you’re under 6 feet tall. Any pain you feel will be offset by the smugness of knowing that this is the exact same amount of legroom that everyone up in first class paid a lot more for.

And because these are regular economy seats, they are neither soft nor wide. I’d recommend bringing a pillow to sit on if you’ve got a delicate tooshie. And lumbar support! FWIW, a pair of wadded up dirty underwear from your backpack will work. Don’t ask me how I know this.

The descent and arrival into Denver

To my surprise, we began the descent into Denver only slightly behind schedule (about 10 minutes worth). The captain said that they were hammer-down pretty much the entire way in an attempt to make up lost time. Yeehaw!

Kinda looks like I’m silently judging the pilot for his or her choice of arrival vectors (vectors that *I* wouldn’t have chosen), doesn’t it? Maybe I was. Maybe I wasn’t. I’m not telling.

United 737 MAX 9 landing on runway 17R Denver International Airport
Welcome to Denver!

We touched down on runway 17R at 6:20 PM, which was only 10 minutes behind schedule. So not only did I have a lot of room to spread out for the entire flight, there was no need to worry about missing my connection to San Diego. A splendid afternoon it had turned out to be.

We have arrived safely (10 minutes late and 5 shades of blue deeper).

I was in no danger of missing my connection, so I’m not even sure why I deplaned at ‘holy crap I’m gonna miss my connecting flight’ pace. Lord have mercy to all of the poor souls who saw me coming at them so intensely. Must’ve been scary!

Pros and cons of Economy Plus on the United 737 MAX 9

Don’t get it twisted. This is a pretty good ‘enhanced’ domestic economy product. It’s just not the best IMHO (Delta takes that honor). The in-seat video screens makes it better than anything Alaska or American (or even Southwest) is offering at he moment, and for some, that may be all that matters.

Pros

  • Access to one of the best in-flight entertainment systems in the sky. At least in the US.
  • Fairly high-powered in-seat power to charge all of your devices.
  • Super-trippy skin-staining blue mood lighting (just as intense as what I experienced in a JetBlue A320 Even More Space seat once).

Cons

  • The inflight menu isn’t quite as good as what Delta offers IMHO. A fruit and cheese plate would’ve been nice.
  • Speaking of food, I don’t think the free snacks are ‘premium’ (like it is on other airlines). It’s the same stuff they’re slinging in economy class.
  • No free alcohol.
  • Premium or not, it’s still a very hard and narrow basic economy seat.

    1. Dang it. Why did I assume (without even checking) that alcohol was free in Economy Plus? Turns out that it isn’t, so I appreciate you letting me know. This is a pretty big deal IMHO even though I don’t drink. It’s just another thing that makes Delta Comfort Plus even better I guess.
