Delta A321neo Comfort Plus review: no meaningful deviation from baseline was observed

Delta A321neo Comfort Plus

My decision to fly Delta A321neo Comfort Plus from Salt Lake City to Fort Lauderdale was a test. A scientific experiment if you will.

You see, I consider Delta to be one of the most consistent airlines in the entire world. They always offer a very good in flight experience from one flight to the next (no matter the aircraft type).

Would Comfort Plus on the A321neo look the same as it is on other aircraft types? Would the legroom be just as nice? What about the service? Would there be more, or less? Better, or worse?

Long story short: yes, yes, good question, same, same.

My full review of Delta A321neo Comfort plus from Salt Lake City to Fort Lauderdale

The flight from SLC to FLL is about 4 1/2 hours as the crow (or Airbus A321neo) flies. That’s a pretty good amount of time to test out any airline product in my opinion, so it was a no-brainer choosing this flight as part of a cross-country journey from San Diego to South Florida.

Arrival at the Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC)

Don’t tell anyone, but I actually flew up from San Diego this particular morning in…wait for it…Comfort Plus on the A321neo. It was the same aircraft even!

I had about an hour and 20 minutes to kill between flights. I used most of that time to try and figure out how I was going to explain my reasons for choosing to review this segment to Fort Lauderdale as opposed to the one that I just flew from San Diego to Salt Lake City. Science is confusing sometimes.

“Son, don’t look now, but I think we’re going to end up in one of those dorky SANspotter airline reviews. Mom is going to kill us.”

Dorky or not, I’m just glad to be here. Welcome to the Salt Lake City International Airport!

Warning: you’ll probably end up dead (just like this guy) if you don’t read my guide for minimum connection times in Salt Lake City. These kinds of tragedies can be avoided!

The boarding process

They got the boarding process started on time at 9:45 AM. I was expecting as much considering that I had just arrived (early) from San Diego on this same aircraft. I’m fairly intelligent, aren’t I? Most scientists are.

Gate B20 Salt Lake City International Airport
I’d like to think that there’s at least one person in this world who thinks that the picture of the departure gate is the best (and the most exciting) picture of the entire review. Whoever you are, this one’s for you.

Everyone probably hates the boarding pass picture, but I do it anyway. Neener neener!

Comfort Plus passengers board with Zone 3. Of course you’ll have the option to board with any zone 3 and higher, but I recommend doing it sooner rather than later. Overhead bin space at the front of the aircraft always fills up fast.

“Zone 3, you’re welcome to board through the Sky Priority lane. And ya’ll going to Fort Lauderdale for spring break for crying out loud. Let’s see some bikinis and banana hammocks!”

The very brief moment in time when I was both on the airplane and in the airport. I told you that this was going to be dorky.

Welcome (and goodbye) to Delta A321neo first class. It was a relatively quick walk back to Comfort Plus.

“Lady, there ain’t no way in hell that’s gonna fi…oh. I see.” Overhead bin space is generous here on the Delta A321neo, so I would advise you to leave your misogynistic pessimism at the boarding door.

Delta A321neo Comfort Plus seat overview

Conmfort Plus on the Delta A321neo is a regular economy seat with a few extra inches of legroom. There are ELEVEN whopping rows of these seats arranged in a 3-3 layout. And yeah. They look exactly the same as they do on any other Delta aircraft (red headrest accents and all).

Delta A321neo Comfort Plus seats row 13
Might as well leave your silly superstitions behind as well. Who knows? You could end up in row 13 like I did.
Delta A321neo Comfort Plus row 13
This is nice. But I’m out of here if I encounter any broken mirrors or black cats.
Delta A321neo Comfort Plus legroom
While I wait for something bad to happen, I might as well show you the spacious legroom. Pretty nice, ain’t it?
Delta A321neo Comfort Plus under seat storage space
Well well well. How convenient is it that there’s enough under seat storage space for an entire litter of little black kittens?
Scott (SANspotter) sitting in a Delta A321neo Comfort Plus seat
Roll your eyes at me all you want, but even the lady sitting behind me checked for black cats and broken mirrors before sitting down.
Delta A321neo Comfort Plus electrical outlets and charging ports
Yay, electrical outlets and USB charging ports! This is row 13 however, so don’t be surprised when I tell you that these didn’t work.
Delta A321neo Comfort Plus video screen
Yay, large video screens! This is row 13 however…(you know the rest).
Delta A321neo Comfort Plus adjustable head rest
This airplane isn’t totally cursed however. At least the adjustable headrests with embroidered COMFORT + logos worked as advertised.

The departure from Salt Lake City

They got us pushed off the gate four minutes early at 10:26 AM. Did I even notice? Not really. The mountainous scenery around the Salt Lake City International Airport is nothing short of stunning, so to say that I was a bit distracted is an understatement. There’s probably a scientific name for that sort of thing, but I’m not the kind of scientist that knows all the answers.

The ground crew was either pushin’ or tuggin’ at this point, but I can’t remember. All you need to know is that we are on our way!
Watching the safety video on the video screen in Delta A321neo Comfort Plus
The video screens are working now (just in time for the safety video). “Follow the floor path lighting to the nearest exit, keeping in mind that your nearest exit may be behind you. Those of you in row 13 will die due to this floor path lighting malfunctioning in your immediate vicinity.”

It was a 12 minute taxi out to runway 34R and we were in the air one minute early at 10:38 AM. Doing good so far…

Well I’ll be. Apparently Mr. John Denver never ventured west of Colorado, because these mountains are every bit as song worthy IMHO.

In flight entertainment

I prefer my scientific experiments to be as efficient as possible. Therefore, all I really need to do to tell you about the in-flight entertainment in Delta A321neo Comfort Plus is the point you to my Delta A321 Comfort Plus review. It’s all the same.

For those of you who can’t be bothered to click any silly links, you’ll be happy to know that there are video screens at every seat featuring loads and loads (and loads) of great content. From movies, to TV series, to YouTube music, to games and podcasts…it’s good.

Choices choices. If ever there was a way to learn a language using brute force, it would be trying to navigate your way through a complex in flight entertainment system such as Delta Studio.

Luckily for you, my self promise of lifelong learning fizzled out about 10 years ago. English it is! Again!

Wi-Fi is free For SkyMiles members. As a reminder, SkyMiles is free to join. They’re basically not giving you any excuse to remain disconnected for the entire duration of the flight.

Oh. What’s that? You wanted to keep track of your progress with the moving map? Not in row 13 you don’t! Shame on me for thinking that this was going to work.

Complementary earbuds (‘buds for bros’ if you choose to give them to friends after the flight).
Scott (SANspotter) testing out the complementary earbuds in Delta A321neo Comfort Plus
I could tell you that the sound of these earbuds was a life altering experience (to the point where I had to question if I had ever truly heard music before), but…facial expressions don’t lie, do they? I don’t think I’m going to be giving these to anybody. At least not anybody that I like.

Food and drinks

Perhaps the most popular benefit of Comfort Plus (no matter the aircraft type) is the free alcohol. Of course you’ll get a free beverage and a snack, but you’ll need to partake in the alcohol to get your moneys worth.

Food for purchase is also available. The free snacks that they provide are not all that substantial, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself reaching for the in-flight menu on longer flights. don’t worry. It happens to the best of us.

Delta A321neo Comfort Plus food menu
Pay no attention to how small the “complementary” section is on the in-flight menu. I see what looks to be a decent fruit and cheese plate, and that’s all that matters. Price be damned!

You’re still paying no attention, right? Good! Alcohol is free to Comfort Plus passengers on all flights over 500 miles, so F them prices. They don’t matter.

My wonderful (roasted & salted) snack basket haul. RIP to each and every one of these turd-like nuggets of deliciousness.
Delta A321neo Comfort Plus fruit and cheese plate
And you thought the RIP’s were over. My poor tray table was a saggin’ under the weight of this $14 fruit and cheese plate bucket!

They also came around with the snack basket once again. Eating this well was not on my bingo card for this flight.
Scott (SANspotter) using the wood utensils in Delta A321neo Comfort Plus
I’m willing to bet these wooden utensils would provide additional nourishment should the cheese plate prove insufficient. Thankfully it didn’t come to that, but it was nice knowing that I had options.

Seat recline and comfort

The decision to name these seats “Comfort Plus” was a bold one. I mean, I do appreciate the extra few inches of legroom. But to call them comfortable (especially as long transcontinental flights) is a bit of a stretch.

Seat recline isn’t any better than what you would experience in a regular economy seat. The padding is the same, as is the width. As a scientist, all I can tell you is that this “comfort” experiment has produced a negative evaluative response.

Delta A321neo Comfort Plus passengers in row 13
Dang it. My attempt to show you what the seat recline is like was foiled by the lack of willing participants in row 12. Lucky row 13 I guess.
Interacting with the touchscreen video screen inDelta A321neo Comfort Plus
FWIW, it’s a fairly long reach to the video screen if the person in front of you doesn’t recline. “Hey buddy, would you mind slamming your seat back into my lap? Thanks!”

The descent and arrival in into Fort Lauderdale

The flight attendants came by with additional drinks and snacks about one hour prior to landing. My reach (and subsequent grab) of the little green bag of pistachios happened instinctually. It’s my go to snack on Delta these days.

The weather was typically ”Florida in the spring” during the descent. Towering clouds, peaks of clear blue sky, and off and on rain showers. Beautiful as always.

Yup, we’re in Florida all right. Hang onto your butts (and your phone, and your drink, and your little bag of pistachios), because it’s about to get bumpy.
Scott (SANspotter) sitting in seat 13F Delta A321neo Comfort Plus
It’s also about to get really sunny. They don’t call this the sunshine state for nothin’.
Looking out the window of a Delta A321neo on approach into the Fort Lauderdale airport
You just know that there was at least one person who proposed ‘the anti-curvy road state’ instead. I tip my hat to him or her for being so honest.

We touched down on runway 10L 12 minutes early at 4:38 PM. I was expecting a lot worse considering that it was peak spring break at the time.

Welcome to Fort Lauderdale!
Unbuckling my seatbelt in Delta A321neo Comfort Plus
Honestly? There was so much fruit and cheese (and pistachios and Sun Chips) in my belly that my hands weren’t even required to release the seatbelt. A firm gut push would’ve done it.
Bulkhead row 12 Delta A321neo Comfort Plus
Row 12 is a little funky. Bulkhead seats on the left, normal seats on the right. Don’t go thinking that this looks luckier than row 13 however. That the bulkhead wall is actually the wall to the mid cabin lavatory.

“At least we didn’t have to walk that far to take a dump.”

Pros and cons of Delta A321neo Comfort Plus

Perhaps the moral of this entire story is that, even on the newest next generation aircraft types such as the A321neo, Comfort Plus is still the same ‘ol Comfort Plus. It’s not any better or any worse. It’s just the same great enhanced economy product that we’ve all come to enjoy over the years.

Pros

  • It is indeed comforting (in the sense that you’ll know exactly what to expect if you’ve flown Comfort Plus on any other aircraft type recently).
  • I do appreciate the extra few inches of legroom. I really do.
  • The free snacks aren’t all that substantial, but at least they’ll let you grab handfuls of them without judgement.
  • Free alcohol!

Cons

  • You’ll be wishing for a few more extra inches of seat width in addition to the extra few inches of legroom on longer flights. I promise you that.
  • The free snacks won’t be enough to keep you satisfied on longer flights. Come prepared!
  • It’s the same exact seat style that anyone who pays for a cheapo basic economy fare will get (minus the extra legroom).

  1. Delta does a truly splendid job maintaining consistency across their aircraft. I flew on a 23-year old A319, and found it to be a identical experience as a two year old Delta A321neo. That said, when I flew economy on the Delta A21N (and had a whole row to myself), I found this product to have slightly enhanced tech with Bluetooth connectivity and all. I also noticed the seat has more give, shape, and just feels better overall (That’s what she said).

    1. One can never doubt what she says lol. But yeah, Delta is easily the most consistent airline in the US right now. United is catching up though!

  2. I used to connect on Delta in SLC every week to CVG for a consulting assignment. I was on the 6 am flight from LAX religiously. Half the plane was asleep. This was before the new SLC terminal.

    1. Every week! That probably felt like a slog considering how cramped the old SLC used to be. But the new terminal is a huge improvement (and super easy to connect through).
