It’s no secret that I’m a fan of United’s Economy Plus product. It’s a lot of extra legroom for not a lot of extra price (usually), and it’s my go-to seating selection on any United flight longer than two hours these days.
I recently got to try it out on their A321neo. The routing was San Diego to Denver, which clocks in at just a tick over two hours. So of course I had to do it. You know, that whole “go-to” thing.
The seats were narrow. Kinda hard. No free alcohol was provided.
But that legroom! You’d be surprised how much a little extra stretchy space offsets the lack of padding and a good buzz.

My full review of United A321neo economy plus from San Diego to Denver
Expecting Economy Plus on United’s A321neo to be better than it is on all of their other narrowbody aircraft wouldn’t be illogical. After all, this aircraft features various cabin enhancements and improvements over other aircraft in United fleet. I went into this with elevated expectations…
Arrival (and checking in) at SAN
This flight was scheduled to depart at 6:35 AM. I stumbled into the airport just after 5 and made a beeline straight for the security checkpoint.
And wouldn’t you know it, I noticed that the United baggage drop and check-in counters were wide open. How come that kind of thing never happens when I have bags to check?

The boarding process
Even though they got the boring process started exactly on time, it felt like they were taking forever to get the process started. Reality flows like molasses before 6 AM I guess.

Economy Plus passengers get to board with Group 2. It’s a big group though, and I certainly didn’t feel special standing in that long boarding queue.

United A321neo Economy Plus seats
There are 27 Economy Plus seats on the A321neo. It’s a standard 3-3 layout, with 4 1/2 rows total. The extra legroom is approximately 4 inches over standard economy. If you’ve flown Delta A321neo Comfort Plus recently, this will feel pretty much the same.

These seats feature large video screens (which have a tilt feature built into them for easier viewing). There are USB A and C charging ports, and full-size electrical outlets.

The departure from San Diego
They got us pushed off the gate 9 minutes early at 6:26 AM. Of course they did. Not having a tight connection to make in Denver (or any connection at all for that matter) guaranteed an early departure. We totally would’ve been late if I had a tight connection to make.

It was a long 27 minute taxi out to the threshold of runway 27. By the time we lifted off, we were behind schedule by 8 minutes. Not too shabby for an early morning flight out of San Diego IMHO.

In flight entertainment
It won’t be until you start poking around at the in-flight entertainment system that you’ll regret not having a flight longer than two hours.

The video entertainment system here on the A321neo features United’s latest and greatest setup with all the bells and whistles:
- Bluetooth connectivity for your headphones
- Full customization of the user interface
- A seemingly unlimited supply of content. Apple TV and Peacock too!

These aircraft feature free Starlink Wi-Fi for Mileage Plus members. It’s easily as fast and free as they promise it to be.

Food and drink
Unlike Delta, United does not serve free alcohol for their “enhanced” economy passengers. So don’t go thinking that you’ll be popping bottles in Economy Plus or anything. It doesn’t quite work like that.

Despite the lack of free alcohol, they do provide free snack snacks and drinks. One of the things I like the most about United Economy Plus is the fact that I almost always get a full can of my beverage of choice. This time was no different.

Food is available for purchase from the in-flight menu. Although, in my experience, it’s just light snacks and junk food. Nothing substantial.
Economy Plus seat recline and comfort
I’ve done a lot of Economy Plus reviews over the years, and unfortunately, there’s nothing new to report about it here the A321neo. There’s also nothing worse about it, so I guess that’s a good thing.

Legroom is excellent of course. The seats themselves are very hard with limited padding, and there’s no lumbar support to speak of. They’re narrow too! Seat recline is hardly worth mentioning however. It’s the exact same amount that you’ll get in standard economy.

The descent and arrival into Denver
It’s been a long time since I’ve flown into Denver without even seeing even the tippy top of the Rocky Mountains. The cloud layer was thick all the way in, and there wasn’t much to see until we got underneath it.

We touched down on runway 34R 12 minutes early at 9:46 AM. From there it was a very long (and typically Denver) taxi over to Concourse B. It was 10:08 AM by the time we docked at gate B21. And wouldn’t you know it? That was our originally scheduled arrival time. Nailed it!

United A321neo Economy Plus pros and cons
More than anything, I appreciated the fact that this was yet another completely consistent Economy Plus experience. It looked, felt, and even smelled the same as every other Economy Plus experience I’ve had in the last four years.
Pros
- You know that I loves me some generous legroom. Disappointed I was not.
- The in-flight entertainment system on the United A321neo is world class.
- Thanks for the full can!
Cons
- The seats are narrow. And hard. RIP to the buttocks (and lower backs) of anyone over the age of 23.
- No free alcohol.
- It’s a bit bland looking compared to the competition. “Corporate” is a pretty good way to describe the design aesthetic IMHO.
