There are a lot of great choices when it comes to flying business class out of Taiwan. One of my favorites is China Airlines 777-300ER business class.

Maybe the food isn’t as good as other Taiwanese airlines. And perhaps the service is a smidge impersonal. But other than that, it’s an extremely spacious, private, and stylish premium airline experience.

And the woodgrain? Delightful.

Checking in

You want to arrive early when flying China Airlines out of TPE. Not only because of how nice the business class lounge is, but because of how crowded the check-in hall can get in Terminal 1. It’s something you kinda need to psych yourself up for.

Entrance to terminal 1 Taipei Taoyuan Airport
Curbside, Terminal 1, Taoyuan Airport, Taipei. It’s early, I’m tired, I can’t speak the language, and I don’t even know if I’m in the right place. There’s only one way to find out!
Check-in area terminal 1 Taipei Taoyuan Airport
Please stand by. I haven’t found out yet. All of these people look as confused as I am.

The business class queue for checking in was far too long for my liking, so I took my chances with a self-serve kiosk instead:

Checking in for my china airlines flight using the kiosk at the Taipei Taoyuan Airport
Finally! Someone who speaks my language! Using the kiosk isn’t all that of an extravagant way of checking in for business class, but you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.

The China Airlines ground experience at TPE

I have two words to describe the experience of walking around Terminal 1 at TPE: big and bland. This is a huge airport, and frankly, there isn’t much to see once past security. It’s just a series of very long white hallways with doors leading to downstairs gate areas.

Terminal 1 shopping and duty-free area Taipei Taoyuan Airport
Shopping? Duty free? They got that here in Terminal 1. Actually, there’s not all that much to do other than shop for alcohol, panties, and perfume.

All Air China business class passengers get complementary access to the Air China Business Class Lounge. That’s where I went for a hearty breakfast (and to protect myself from purchasing something very expensive out of the main terminal).

Wait, where is everybody? I assume this means that I can go back to the lounge?
SANspotter waiting at gate A8 Taipei Taoyuan Airport
That would’ve been the logical thing to do. But I’ve never been good with logic.

She’s here! This is the China Airlines 777-300ER that would be taking me up to Seoul this morning. The fact that I arrived before the airplane (and sunrise) tells you everything you need to know about how excited I was about this.

The boarding process

Boarding started right on time at 7:10 AM. Unlike how they do it back in the US, business class was the first group to be called. Everyone else (including passengers who needed extra time) had to wait.

The sooner we get out of here, the better. I’m feeling awfully tempted to go back upstairs and drop some cash on panties and alcohol.

Boarding has begun. I know. This doesn’t seem all that business class-like yet, but keep scrolling. It’s gonna be business class overload in just a moment…

I’m already seen woodgrain! (And a flight attendant who is obviously thinking “F**k! It’s that SANspotter a**hole!”)

China Airlines 777-300ER business class cabin and seats

Business class on the China Airlines 777-300ER consists of 40 seats in two cabins separated by a galley. It’s a 1-2-1 seating configuration, and my seat was 11A (a window seat in the second row of the forward cabin).

This is really nice, isn’t it? I’m really liking the light woodgrain and purple mood lighting.
China Airlines 777-300ER business class window seat 11A
My seat (11A). The verdict? There’s a lot more woodgrain here than in the seat that I had in EVA Air 787-9 business class, that’s for dang sure.
China Airlines 777-300ER business class passengers
You know you’re in for a good time when you see other passengers taking pictures of their passport and boarding pass in front of the fruity pre-departure cocktail.
China Airlines 777-300ER business class center section seats
The seats in the center section are just a spacious (and private) BTW. And they angle towards each other, so RIP to you and your travel companion if y’all are sick and tired of putting up with each other’s bullsh*t on this trip so far.
China Airlines 777-300ER business class video screen and a tray table
The video screens in these seats are huge – and impossible to reach. They’re not as distant as what are you’ll experience in Korean Air 777-300ER Business Class, but just know that you’ll be leaning forward as you peck away on the menu items.
China Airlines 777-300ER business class legroom
The legroom? Your knees will be happy, but be prepared to get an earful about how tight the footwell is from your feet.
China Airlines 777-300ER business class personal lamp
What is it with Taiwanese airlines and lamps in business class? This is very similar to what I experienced in Starlux A350-900 business class. And I like it! A lot.

The amount of woodgrain in this business class cabin is next-level awesome. I don’t even care if it’s not real wood. It looks great.

China Airlines 777-300ER business class seat privacy
Privacy is excellent in these seats. I almost couldn’t even tell what kind of pre-departure drink she chose.
China Airlines 777-300ER business class seat controls
All seat functions are controlled by this convenient and easy to understand touchscreen display. Don’t worry if you don’t know what all of these buttons do. They will all make you more comfortable.

Amenities

Shortly after sitting down, the lead a flight attended offered the usual assortment of pre-poured beverages on a tray (champagne, water, and fruit juice). I declined, but I did appreciate the quick followup with a hot towel and breakfast menu.

China Airlines 777-300ER business class hot towel
“Slightly scented, moist, and pleasurable.” I’m sorry, but it’ll never not be disgusting to describe the hot towel service.

Although full amenity kits were not provided on this flight, China Airlines does provide them on long-haul routes to and from Taiwan.

The departure from TPE

The skies over Taipei were gloomy and gray as we pushed off the gate at 8:07 AM (17 minutes late). I took advantage of the delay to peruse the safety card. Like the total dork that I am.

Pushing off the gate. The fact that I can already smell breakfast being heated up in the galley negates any bad thoughts about our delayed departure.

Absolutely nothing exciting happened during our taxi out to runway 05L. Other than the scent of breakfast becoming stronger with each passing minute, I mean.

Ripping out of TPE like an F22 late for target practice. Yeeee-haw!

Things got more 777-300ER-like once we climbed above the clouds unfortunately. Oh well. At least they’ll be serving breakfast soon.

Not before one more little hit of the afterburners though! The pilot in command of this aircraft was a legitimate badass.

In-flight entertainment

Because these are the exact same seats that you saw in my American Airlines 787-9 business class review, everything I said about how amazing (and large) the video screen is still applies. It’s really nice – though a bit too glossy and reflective in my opinion.

China Airlines 777-300ER business class noise canceling headphones
Noise canceling headphones. Comfortable, lightweight, but not strong enough to cancel out all of the voices in my head unfortunately.

The in-flight entertainment system consists of mostly Asian movies and TV shows, with a smattering of western options. Anyone hoping to watch the latest and greatest Hollywood blockbusters might be disappointed. If that’s you, bring your own.

China Airlines 777-300ER business class in-flight entertainment system remote control
Good news! There’s a really nice touch screen remote control for the entertainment system. Not only does it feature a simplified user interface (which is much easier to interact with), the fact that it exists means that you won’t have to bend forward to touch the main screen.
China Airlines 777-300ER business class video screen
These videos screens are huge. Very responsive. Bright enough. Glossy and reflective though. You ain’t gonna see sh*t with an open window shade next to it.

Business class meal service

It felt like we were still climbing to cruising altitude when the flight attendants started coming by with tablecloths and drinks. This is not a criticism. Prompt cabin service is a good thing!

China Airlines 777-300ER business class breakfast menu front cover
I especially like how the front cover of the menu suggests that you’re going to be eating seafood – whether you like it or not.

The following two pictures are the contents of the menu (click on each to see higher resolution versions). The one on the left is breakfast, and the one on the right is lunch:

China Airlines 777-300ER business class breakfast
I went with the Traditional Chinese option, which consisted of shrimp with pumpkin and shredded pork over rice noodles. That turd looking thing on the left was an overcooked croissant. Poor little guy.

The other meal option was a western-style scrambled eggs plate. I have no regrets going with the rice noodles. Was it as high quality as what I experienced in Starlux A321neo business class? Not even close. It was tasty enough though.

China Airlines 777-300ER business class breakfast service
Here’s a slightly wider angle showing what the entire tray table setup was like. And the croissant was actually good the way. Just a little crispy, that’s all.
SANspotter eating breakfast in China Airlines 777-300ER business class
Doubt I’ll ever be allowed back into France for defending the croissant like that. Considering how much I enjoyed Air France 777-300ER business class, that would be a real shame. I was hoping to experience it again at some point.

The lavatory

There are 3 business class lavatories on the China Airlines 777-300ER. The one at the very front of the plane is the largest. They were all very clean, but notably void of any style.

China Airlines 777-300ER business class lavatory
Not that I was expecting a wood toilet or anything, but some faux woodgrain would’ve gone along way to make this lavatory seem more warm and inviting. Just an idea.

Seat comfort

Even though this is a very common reverse herringbone style seat that you’ll find on a variety of other airlines, China Airlines did a very good job of making theirs feel warm and inviting. The mood lighting, side lamp, and woodgrain (when mixed altogether) is pretty darn nice.

SANspotter sleeping in China Airlines 777-300ER business class
Dead bodies (myself included) everywhere. As hard as you may try to resist, you will succumb to sleep in these seats.
Relaxing in a China Airlines 777-300ER business class seat
Lounging (while watching your pixel by pixel progress on the map) is inevitable as well. Reclining that seat halfway and maxing out the massage function was…pleasurable.

Yes, these are fully lie flat seats. I didn’t recline fully on this flight, but I know from past experiences on other airlines with these exact same seats that’s a really comfortable experience.

The arrival in Seoul

The descent into ICN was beautiful. Especially as we get closer to Seoul. The brown arid landscape of southern South Korea slowly morphed to a glistening winter wonderland, and my eyes were glued to the window all the way in.

Overflowing South Korea on approach to Seoul
I see London, I see France…oops. Wrong part of the world. But it’s nice to see South Korea again!
China Airlines 777-300ER business class video screen map showing approach to Seoul Incheon airport
Looks like the pilots have already arrived at Incheon. Those of us here back in the main cabin still have a ways to go yet.

We touched down at exactly 10:54 AM – which just so happened to be exactly on time. Yet more evidence that our pilot was indeed a total badass.

China Airlines 777-300ER landing at Seoul incheon airport
Welcome to Seoul!Annyeonghaseyoooo!”

It was a very lengthy 21 minute taxi to the gate. The longer the better when you’re sitting in the seat as good as this, right?

Pulling up to gate 126 ICN airport
Not a whole lot of action here ICN this morning. No offense to China Eastern and a LOT Polish Airlines of course.

Gotta love a dual jet bridge setup. At least I do.

Thanks for the ride B-18005! Your woodgrain will not be forgotten.

Pros and cons

I found the hard product (seats / cabin) to be very nice. The soft product (service) on the other hand, was typical of what you’d find on a US airline.

Of course the cabin crew was friendly and efficient, but they weren’t exactly tripping over themselves to make sure I had everything I needed for a comfortable flight.

Pros

  • They put a lot of effort into style and design of the seats. Everything feels “rich.”
  • There’s a second (smaller) business class cabin behind the one that I was seated in. Choose a seat in that smaller cabin for a more intimate (and private) experience.
  • The video screens are great – at least when the cabin is dark.

Cons

  • The quality of the food is mediocre. I recommend flying Starlux if you want a really good in-flight meal.
  • The footwell will feel a little tight to anyone with restless feet. It’ll be even worse if your feet are large as well.
