Delta A320 First Class

Delta A320 first class isn’t the most luxurious airline experience in the world (or the US for that matter), but you know what? It’s consistent. Disgustingly so.

If you have flown domestic first class on any other Delta aircraft in the last 10 years, you already know what you’re going to get on the A320:

  • A wide seat with a decent leg room
  • Free Wi-Fi (if you’re a SkyMiles member)
  • Unlimited snacks and drinks (including alcohol)
  • A hot meal (if the flight is longer than 2 1/2 hours)
  • More TV shows, movies, and live TV than you could possibly watch on a single flight

Why disgusting? Because I hate how it reminds me of how inconsistent I am (with a variety of things) in my personal life. I wish I could be more like Delta.

A full review of my Delta A320 first class experience from Newark to Detroit

Prior to this flight, the last time I was on a Delta A320 was in 2014. Not much has changed since then. Maybe the seats (and the in-flight entertainment system) are a little different, but the service is exactly the same. It was good back then, and it’s just as good now. Consistency, baby!

My arrival at Newark Liberty Airport (EWR)

My heart was aflutter with giddy anticipation as the hotel shuttle bus rolled up to the entrance of Terminal A. This was going to be my first experience in this part of EWR, and despite all the negative things that I’ve heard about this airport, I was actually looking forward to it. “Bring it mofos!”

And so it begins. Not only is this the entrance to a terminal, it’s also the entrance to Terminal A. I had no idea that EWR was going to be so easy to figure out.
Scott (SANspotter) posing for a picture in the tickling hall Terminal A EWR
I also had no idea that it was going to be this nice. “It’s a nice terminal indeed!”
Delta air lines check in and baggage drop area terminal A EWR
Delta’s check in and baggage drop area looks pretty nice as well. My plan to show up today and make snobbish jokes about how crappy EWR is isn’t going well so far. I’m actually having fun!
Entrance into terminal A at EWR after clearing the security checkpoint
It’s like they knew that I (and my stupid jokes) were coming, because it got even nicer once I cleared the security checkpoint. The hell is goin’ on here?
Walking through Concourse A at the Newark liberty international Airport
There we go. This is the EWR that I was expecting (minus the Shake Shack and the huge poster of dudes on horses of course). Flying any airline other than United out of Newark isn’t supposed to be so visually stimulating.
Gate A3 Newark Liberty Airport
It’s going to be gate A3 today. I was hoping for gate A320, but close enough I guess.
Delta A320 parked at gate A3 EWR
Hence the reason for all of that hoping and praying. This is my ride to Detroit this afternoon.

Making things interesting was the fact that I had flown on this particular A320 twice before (when it was still operating for Northwest Airlines). The first time was in 1999 on a flight from San Diego to Detroit. The second time was in 2008 on a flight from Detroit to Indianapolis. Good to see you old friend!

The boarding process for flight number 2577 to DTW

The gate agents definitely had it easy once the boarding process got underway at 12:20 PM. Is the fact that there weren’t many people in the gate area waiting to get on surprising to you? It shouldn’t be. EWR to DTW isn’t the most exotic route in this world, and I can’t imagine anyone spending all of their hard earned cash (or points) for the chance to experience it.

Except for me of course. I actually paid for this flight using points. But it only cost me 16,000 SkyMiles total, so don’t judge me too severely.

Do I know how to pick a fun pair of cities, or what? Say what you want about Newark, but watch yo mouth when it comes to Detroit. It’s my hometown. And I’m proud of it!

Imagine how blown his mind would be if I told him that I was actually looking forward to going to Detroit.

Delta A320 first class seat and cabin overview

Just as it is on all of Delta’s other mainline aircraft, first class on the A320 is arranged in a 2-2 layout. There are 4 rows, consisting of 16 seats total. And yes, these are exactly the same seats as you will find on all of Delta’s domestic mainline aircraft. Remember what I said about consistency?

Delta A320 first class leg room
Leg room is decent. Elbow room is fantastic. Shirt color choice is just so-so (I kinda regret that one).
Delta A320 first class under seat storage space
Under seat storage space is mid. Meh. Eh. Mostly fine, I guess.

These seats feature large video screens with integrated USB charging ports. There are also two full-size electrical outlets located between the seats.

The older I get, the less useful these “low and out of the way” electrical outlets become. I imagine that anyone under 35 (with a decent spine) is gonna dig these things like a ditch however.
Delta A320 first class video screens with USB power outlets
Fear not, old chap. There are USB power outlets located just beneath the video screens. Whether or not they’ll actually charge your phone isn’t guaranteed (it’s always been a mixed bag in my experience), but I like that they exist.

The departure from EWR

Perhaps the most shocking thing about this entire flight was the fact that we pushed off the gate 11 minutes early at 12:49 PM. So much for Newark being the worst airport in the world I guess.

Delta A320 pushing back from the gate at EWR
Aaaand we’re off. But don’t get excited, because this is EWR after all. I had a sneaky suspicion that there was a large group of people over on flightradar24.com placing bets on how long we would sit on the taxiway before being given clearance to take off.
Scott (SANspotter) looking out the window of a Delta A320
I was feeling more optimistic than usual, so I don’t think I would have been willing to wager more than $5 on a 15 minute taxi time. Conditions seemed ripe for an on-time departure.
Taking off from runway 22R in a Delta A320 at EWR
Welp, it took 21 minutes to get to this point, so who do I send the five dollars to? Then again, skipping town immediately after losing a bet is awfully convenient…

In-flight entertainment

I have nothing bad to say about the Delta Studio experience. The selection of movies, TV shows, live TV, podcasts, music, and games is phenomenal. It’s almost too much actually, but I ain’t gonna complain.

Delta A320 first class video entertainment system welcome screen
According to the main screen of the video entertainment system, I am to be identified as a single number and letter for the duration of the flight. Oh well. ‘3D’ has a nice ring to it (it makes me sound multidimensional and techy).

I also really like the fact that it’ll remember how far deep into a movie or TV show I was on my last flight, and it’s super easy to pick up from that point on the next one. Genius!

High speed Wi-Fi is completely free. You have to be a Delta SkyMiles member of course, but that’s a small price to pay to be able to stay connected for the entire duration of the flight.

Scott (SANspotter) reaching out to touch the video screen in Delta A320 first class
Don’t let the age of this aircraft (15 years) fool you. These video screens are still snappy, responsive, and not laggy at all (unlike a certain airline reviewer that I know).
Adjustable video screen in Delta A320 first class
These screens are highly adjustable as well (something I wish I could still say about my spine).

Food and drinks

Delta does serve full (hot) meals in first class on the A320. The catch is that they only do it on flights longer than 2 1/2 hours. For this flight from Newark to Detroit, all we got was the snack basket and a drink (both of which were unlimited – you just have to ask if you want more).

PISTACHIOS. *No Shells* Wonderful! Roasted and Salted. 120 calories. NET WEIGHT 0.74 OZ (21 g).
Cup of Diet Coke in Delta A320 first class
The Diet Coke wasn’t as satisfying as the pistachios IMHO. It was a little too flat and tired to distract me from the fact that I probably should’ve made a healthier drink selection.

“Would it have killed me to ask for a cup of ice water instead?”
Scott (SANspotter) drinking Diet Coke in Delta A320 first class
“Damn right it would’ve.” Diet Coke (even when it’s flat and a stale) is good!
Delta domestic First Class lasagna lunch
If you somehow manage to find yourself on a Delta A320 flight longer than 2 1/2 hours (there aren’t many), you’ll get a full meal that will look as substantial (but probably not as messy) as this. This is what I was served in Delta 717 first class once on a flight from CLT to MSP.

Seat and cabin comfort

These seats are survivable on flights under four hours in length IMHO. They’re not very well padded, and they don’t recline all that steeply, but they’ll do. I’ve certainly had better.

Crossing my legs in Delta A320 first class
Crossed legs are happy legs (especially when they’re filled with Diet Coke and pistachios).

Seat width is more impressive than the leg room. If legroom is all that matters to you, save the money and go for a seat in Comfort Plus instead. You can read my Delta A321 Comfort Plus review to get a good idea of what it’s like here on the A320.

The arrival into DTW

We began the descent into Detroit a full 10 minutes early. The weather was perfect(ish), the scenery was okay(ish), in the good news is that I was still feeling fairly comfortable(ish).

Overflying DTW of the downwind approach
We got a really nice view of DTW on the downwind approach. Look at all them runways! Decisions decisions…
Delta A320 lining up for approach at DTW
Looks to me as if they’ve picked runway I-94. Whether we go westbound or eastbound is unknown at this point.
Dense forest around the perimeter of the Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW)
Or maybe it’s going to be the “crash an Airbus A320 into a dense forest” approach? That could be fun too.
Delta A320 landing on runway 03R at DTW
Fast forward 45 seconds, and we landed safely (like responsible adults) on runway 03R. Welcome to Detroit!

We landed on runway 03R at 2:35 PM, and spent 7 minutes taxiing over to gate A31 in the McNamara Terminal. DTW arrivals are never all that exciting, but for me, it always feels nice to be arriving home once again (I grew up just north of Detroit).

Delta A320 taxiing to the gate just moment after arrival at DTW
Cry all you want about the lack of filet mignon, but I had a pretty good time. Delta offers an extremely consistent domestic first class product from one flight to the next, and this was just as good as the rest.
Delta A320 pulling up to gate A31 at DTW moments after arriving from EWR
Oh look, it’s a CRJ! I flew from Los Angeles to San Diego in Delta CRJ-900 economy once, and let’s just say that I do not envy the people on that airplane (employees or passengers).
Passengers walking up the jet bridge at gate A31 DTW
Someone looks just as excited as I am about arriving at DTW (either that or he’s facing one heck of an epic poo emergency). Bro has got some spring in his step!

“Delta A320 first class experienced. My life is now complete.”

Delta A320 pros and cons

I wouldn’t necessarily advise you to go out of your way to get a ride on in Delta A320 first class (unless maybe Spirit A320 first class is your only other option). It’s pretty much the exact same experience that you’ll get on any other Delta mainline aircraft, so it’s not anything special or unique. It’s nice enough though.

Pros

  • Seat width is excellent. There’s a lot of wiggle room from side to side.
  • Large video screens with a phenomenal in-flight entertainment system.
  • Unlimited snacks and drinks.

Cons

  • Leg room is just ok. It’s exactly the same as what you’ll get back behind the curtain in Comfort Plus actually.
  • There isn’t much padding in these seats (so wear something squishy)
  • On a flight less than two hours in length? No meal for you!
