From the instant I purchased this reservation, I debated whether or not I was going to write a trip report for this adventure up to Reno Nevada on Southwest Airlines. First of all, this is Southwest Airlines we are talking about here – not exactly an exotic airline with world class service. They offer a basic (but good) product that is only slightly better than taking the bus, and there probably wouldn’t be that much to write about. And Second, the trip up to Reno from San Diego is going to take four segments – and having flown Southwest Airlines many times in the past, I suspect that each flight will be nearly the same. This has the potential to be a very dry trip report!
But then I started to think about why I started writing trip reports. I hate to admit it, but I do this for myself more than anything else and I’m certainly not trying to impress anyone. I think of these documents as part of my personal life diary, and it’s fun to look back read about the things I’ve done and places I’ve been. So with that said, here we go…
The purpose of this trip was for a mini family get-together of sorts. Because we had so much fun on our adventure to Belize last year, we thought it would be fun to do something again this year. Long story short: we decided to go skiing at Heavenly / Lake Tahoe. And an adventure this will truly be – I, like the rest of my family, grew up wearing ski’s but none of us had done it at any point in the last 20 years. Will we remember how? Will we even survive?? We were worried but the building excitement pushed those nagging feelings aside.
My family would be flying in from Minneapolis (MSP) and West Palm Beach (PBI), and my wife and I coming from here in San Diego. We thought about driving, but in the end, decided to save some time and fly instead. The best options were United through SFO or LAX, or Southwest – which does serve RNO non-stop from SAN. However, the timing of the non-stop flight wasn’t convenient and we didn’t want to fly on regional jets and prop planes with UA, so we chose to connect trough LAS on WN. The exact itinerary is as follows:
2/20/14 WN455 San Diego to Las Vegas
2/20/14 WN2953 Las Vegas to Reno
2/23/14 WN695 Reno to Las Vegas
2/23/14 WN539 Las Vegas to San Diego
Thanks for reading – I’ll try my best to make things interesting for this report on my short journey north.
