I’m on a roll now. After my trip to Denver and back on Frontier airlines in June, I was inspired to try yet another airline that I’ve never flown before. My list of airlines that serve San Diego that I haven’t flown yet is growing smaller, and it’s pretty much slim pickin’s now. So which one was I going to try this time?

The answer (like always) was highly dependent on my work/family schedule. I don’t have the flexability at the moment to get away for more than a couple days at a time, so that pretty much eliminated a trip to Asia on Japan Airlines. Volaris was also out, simply because I feel that if I’m going to Mexico, I want to spend at least a few days there.

So that left me with Allegiant, Sun Country, Westjet, and Sea Port. From that list, Allegiant seemed the most intriguing to me simply due to the fact that the FAA is on thier case hard for a laundry list of violations and they are arguably one incident away from being shut down for good. No, it’s not like I have a death wish or anything, but who doesn’t like a bit of drama? Seriously though, I just wanted to see how “bottom of the barrel” Allegiant Airlines really is.

After all, I tried Spirit back in January expecting the worst and I ended up pleasantly surprised. Would I feel the same this time? There was only one way to find out!

Unfortunately, Allegiant only flies to San Diego a few times a week from Bellingham, WA, and that restricted schedule made it it difficult to schedule both an outbound and return with them. I was forced to choose one or the other this case, using another airline to fill the gap.

Long story short, I decided to take a Friday evening outbound on Allegiant to Bellingham and fly back to San Diego the next day on Alaska Airlines via Seattle. As an added bonus, the Bellingham (BLI) to SEA segment would be operated by Horizon on a Q400 Dash 8 – an aircraft type I’ve never flown before. Sounds like a fun trip that only a true aviation nerd like me could truly enjoy!

Just for archival purposes, here are screenshots of my confirmations from both and

And here is the complete round-trip flight itinerary:

07/31/15 G4 232 San Diego to Bellingham – A319
08/01/15 QX 2481 Bellingham to Seattle – Q400
08/01/15 AS 496 Seattle to San Diego – 737-800

It’s been a long time since I’ve had an overnight trip to the Pacific Northwest, so I was looking forward to this trip as soon as I booked the reservations. It’s a beautiful part of the country, and I hope to at least have the time to drive out to Mt Baker and back to check out the scenery. More importantly, I hope Allegiant doesn’t kill me.
