As I get older, I’m finding it more and more difficult to do fun and interesting weekend getaway trips that qualify as “new to me” experiences. The best part of travel, for me, has always been seeing new places and trying new things. There’s so much I want to see in this world and I’m trying my best to get out there and see as much of it as I can before I kick off. But now that I’m quickly approaching Old Man status, I’m increasingly being faced with the situation of having “been there done that” many times over. It’s not such a bad thing, as I’m very thankful for the experiences that I’ve had, but it’s a lot harder these days put together quick and easy trips to places I’ve never been before. As Johnny Cash once famously sang, “I’ve been everywhere, man”.
So there I was, sitting in front of my computer wearing nothing but my favorite underwear while desperately scouring the interwebs looking for a quick and cheap weekend getaway for the last weekend of May. It wasn’t a very pretty scene, and I’m surprised my cat wasn’t offended by my nakedness and the depressing mumbling coming from my face as I hopped from site to site unable to find what I was looking for. What they say about the summer travel season is true: prices do go up – quite a bit actually – and the only destinations I could find that involved cheap airfare were places that I’ve been so many times before.
One of those destinations happened to be Miami. For reasons I simply couldn’t fathom, airfare, hotel, and car rental prices for the last weekend in May were dirt cheap. While most destinations in the rest of the country were priced well beyond my comfort zone, Miami was showing up as the cheapo destination for that weekend. I’ve been to Miami so many times that I’ve lost count, and heck – it’s almost like home to me since I’ve got family spread out all over the state of Florida. It’s a place I’m very much familiar with.
I’m not sure what you would do in the same situation, but the traveler in me concluded that a weekend in Miami (a place that isn’t very new and exciting to me anymore) would be better than a normal weekend at home. Besides, the simple act of traveling is what makes me happy and I could be just as happy flying to Fort Wayne as I could to anywhere else. I simply love being in airports and airplanes, and as long as I’m moving I’m happy.
One interesting thing that I discovered during the booking process for this trip was the realization that American Airlines has two daily nonstop flights from San Diego to Miami. Really? Since when? I already knew that they had a daily nonstop redeye flight linking these two cities, but I had no idea that there was a daytime flight as well. How cool is that? Especially for me considering that I fly to Florida at least once a year to visit family. It’s an option that I didn’t even know existed!
Here’s the itinerary I ended up with:
05/27/17 AA1815 economy class San Diego to Miami (A319)
05/29/17 AA1815 economy class Miami to San Diego (A319)
That’s a long flight for an A319, but the airliner nerd in me found it to be an interesting flight / aircraft combo. I was quite proud with my booking, and I was very much looking forward to giving it a shot. However, reality sank in pretty hard the day after I booked this trip as I realized that there was absolutely nothing in Miami that I wanted to see or do. Therefore, it was a struggle to come up with a plan – at least compared to some of my other recent big trips (like Taiwan for example). But hey, as I said before, the simple act of traveling is enough to keep me happy and inspired, and I did end up having fun. I rented a car for a day and drove to Key West and back, which was a total mistake due to my underestimating how long it would take, but it was still fun nonetheless and better sitting on the couch watching TV at home.
I’ll try to rip through these trip reports as fast as I can since I’m fully aware that American Airlines A319 economy class isn’t the most exciting travel product to read about. But there’s some fun stuff coming up after I finish this one, so let’s jump right in and get’r done!
