The good thing about reading blogs like onemileatatime is that they inspire me to get up off my homebody butt and see the world. I used to do a lot of international trips for no other reason than going just for the sake seeing new places, and it had been a long time since my last trip of this kind. After reading yet another one of Ben’s long-haul first class adventures to southeast Asia, I knew it was time for me to hit the road again on a meaningless trip to a far away land.
My wife, on the other hand, isn’t so adventurous. As I mentioned in my last trip report, she encourages me to to these kinds of trips solo for the mere fact that she values her quiet time and looks forward to having the house to herself while I am away. “Go and have fun!” she said. And that’s exactly what I planned to do…
So now that I had the inspiration (and permission from the boss) for the trip, the fun part began: planning! The only requirement I had was that the destination needed to involve lots of long-haul international flying for a fair price. I really didn’t care about the destination so much, but it was highly preferable to be someplace that I’ve never been to before.
The Kayak iPad app is awesome for this kind of flight planning. You just tell it where you want to go (and when), and it will instantly spit out the best fares for that particular route. As I was searching, I started to notice some ridiculously good economy class fares out of SAN to Europe for mid June. “Cheap fares to Europe” and “June” aren’t always synonymous with one other, so I found this to be quite interesting – and it got me thinking a bit about whether or not business class tickets might be a good deal as well. Long story short, indeed they were, and I ended up scoring Club World (business class) seats on British Airways to Stockholm Sweden for a really sweet price. The routing was as follows:
6/15/13 BA272 San Diego to London
6/16/13 BA782 London to Stockholm
6/18/13 BA771 Stockholm to London
6/18/13 BA273 London to San Diego
I’ve always wanted to try British Airways out of San Diego, so I was super excited to finally get my chance. It would also be my first trip to Sweden, which made the deal even sweeter. This was going to be great!
How the heck am I able to fly in business class all the time?
